1. What Is the Q-Code?
Though initially designed for telegraphy, Q-codes are also widely used in voice communications today.
Historical Origins
The original Q-signals were created in the early 1900s by the British Postmaster General for use by British ships and coast stations. They proved so useful that radio operators worldwide began using them. When an English-speaking operator receives QTH?, they understand it as "What is your location?" A Slovak-speaking operator translates it to "Aká je tvoja poloha?" while a German-speaking operator hears "Wo befinden Sie sich?"
At the Second International Radiotelegraph Convention in London in July 1912, delegates adopted a list of 45 different Q-codes. Many are still used today, more than 100 years later.
Why Q-Codes Matter
- Efficiency — Sending "QTH" in CW takes just a few dots and dashes, while "What is your location?" takes much longer.
- Language Barrier — Whether an operator speaks Chinese, English, or German, hearing
QTH?is instantly understood. - Standardization — Uniform expressions reduce misunderstandings caused by noise or accent differences.
2. How to Use Q-Codes
Q-codes are flexible — the same code can serve as both a question and an answer. The key is the question mark:
- As a question: Add a question mark after the code.
Example:QTH?= "What is your location?" - As an answer/statement: Follow the code with specific information, or use it alone.
Example:QTH BEIJING= "My location is Beijing."
In informal ham language, some codes have slightly diverted from their original meaning and are used just as a replacement for a specific word. For example, QTH is commonly used as a noun meaning "location," and QSO is used as a verb meaning "to make a contact."

6. Tips for Beginners
- QRL? vs QRZ? — Before calling on a frequency, always send
QRL?to check if it's in use. UseQRZ?only when you didn't catch who's calling you. - Don't overuse Q-codes in voice — On SSB/FM, if signals are good, plain language is more natural and often clearer.
- QSL has two meanings — It means both "I confirm receipt" and the physical QSL confirmation card.
- QRP is a culture — "QRP" not only means "decrease power," it also refers to the entire low-power operating movement. Many hams enjoy the challenge of making contacts with 5 watts or less.
